Specialization Track in Early Music
Program Structure
Studies in the Early Music Specialization Track take place within the framework of the degree program, according to the student’s department and faculty.
The specialization courses replace required and elective courses, meaning that they do not constitute additional credit points, but rather provide in-depth study in the field as part of the degree curriculum.
- Six semesters of early music performance workshops, totaling 12 credits. The workshops will be taught by different faculty members on a rotating basis and will be offered at both beginner and advanced levels. Some workshops will be held in collaboration with faculty and students from other institutions in Europe.
- Participation in ensembles, totaling 8 credits, over at least two years.
- Four theoretical courses, totaling 8 credits. Examples of courses include:
- Source Studies — examination of primary sources in performance practice from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including deciphering and reading from authentic notation.
- The History of the Historically Informed Performance Movement.
- Music and Literature in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
- Jerusalem, the Crusades, and Pilgrimage in Music.
- Bach Counterpoint.
- Intensive courses taught by guest lecturers from abroad.
In the three years since the track was launched, students have met many artists in master classes, including Kenneth Weiss (France), Susanne Scholz (Austria), Walter Reiter (UK), Andrew Parrott (UK), Ashley Solomon (UK), David Shemer (Israel), Carsten Eckert (Austria), Matthias Maute (Canada), and others.
Students in the track regularly participate in early opera productions with the Vocal Department, as well as in concerts, national and international festivals, competitions, and student exchange programs.
